MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions — the business side of travel and events, from board meetings and dealer reward trips to sales conferences and trade shows. A 2019 Ministry of Tourism study valued India’s MICE market at ₹37,576 crore, with about 65% of events business-to-business (Ministry of Tourism study via Storyboard18).

The same study, cited by the Tourism Minister in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, put international MICE events at about 22% of the market (Ministry of Tourism study via Storyboard18). Most Indian MICE spend is domestic companies moving their own people, partners and customers.

What is MICE tourism — and how is it different from a MICE event?

Same acronym, two points of view.

MICE tourism is the destination’s view: groups travelling for business, filling hotel rooms, flights and convention halls. Tourism departments and convention bureaus use the term. A MICE event is the company’s view: the actual offsite, incentive trip, conference or exhibition you are organising.

For a buyer, the practical point is that MICE trips combine two jobs — travel management (flights, rooms, transfers, visas where needed) and event production (stage, sound, programme, awards). Many agencies are strong at one. Ask who handles each before you sign.

What changes the answer

Goa and Kerala as MICE destinations

  • Goa suits large incentive and dealer groups: resort inventory at scale and large ballrooms such as Grand Hyatt Goa’s, listed at about 1,150 sq m (Hyatt). November–February is peak, busiest and priciest (season guide).
  • Kerala suits experience-led incentives and conferences in Kochi, where LBICC’s Liwa hall is listed for up to 3,000 guests (Hyatt LBICC). Backwater resorts are smaller — Kumarakom Lake Resort lists about 85 theatre (directory).
  • Bangalore is the conference and exhibition base, with BIEC and KTPO for scale and drive-to resorts for meetings.

What is the full form of MICE?
Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. Some people use “Conventions” for C and “Events” for E; the meaning is the same — travel and events that businesses pay for, from a leadership meeting at a resort to a trade show at an exhibition centre.
What are MICE events?
Business events that usually involve travel: leadership meetings away from the office, incentive trips for top performers, conferences and conventions, and exhibitions or trade shows. In India they are mostly business-to-business — about 65% of events, according to a 2019 Ministry of Tourism study.
What is an incentive trip?
A reward trip for top performers — dealers or sales teams — usually two to four nights at a leisure destination with curated experiences and a recognition dinner. The qualifying targets are announced months ahead, so the trip works as motivation as well as reward. See MICE and incentive trips.
Is MICE the same as corporate events?
